Thousands of jubilant supporters ran onto the field to celebrate their return to the top flight, only for news of a late Norwich goal against Derby to filter through and ensure the champagne was put on ice again.
Rangers still only need one point from matches against Watford and Leeds to rubber-stamp promotion and the title, although their goal difference means they are unlikely to be caught regardless.
Hall said: "We've got to remember we are in a great position.
"When the fans rushed on I thought that was it, that we had won promotion. I assumed the other games had finished and it was only when we came off the pitch that we found out Norwich had scored a late winner.
"It felt more like we had been relegated than nearly secured promotion. We were disappointed, no-one was happy."
