Reading v QPR

QPR are hoping that Tommy Smith will return from the hamstring problem that forced him to miss Tuesday evening's win against his former club Portsmouth.

Martin Rowlands is still struggling with a calf strain.

MATCH PREVIEW

Queens Park Rangers are yet to win at the Madejski Stadium. Their last away triumph against Reading was at Elm Park in September 1997, when they laboured to a thoroughly unimpressive 2-1 win towards the end of Stewart Houston's unhappy reign as Rangers manager.

Mike Sheron, Houston's flagship capture and still the club's record signing, made his debut that night, and scored the winner with the help of a lucky deflection. But Rangers' big spending failed to lift them back into the top flight at the second attempt, and from then the club's fortunes went from bad to worse.

Now, after 15 years out of the Premier League, Rangers head to Reading five points clear at the top of the table, with current boss Neil Warnock on course to succeed where Houston and others failed. Their superiority at the top of the Championship is underlined by their goal difference of +30, which far outstrips the division's next best: Nottingham Forest's +15.

But they face a Reading side that are in good form. Brian McDermott's men have lost only one of their last 13 league matches, and are unbeaten in eight at home. And on Tuesday the Royals came within seconds of winning at Cardiff, who rescued a point with a Craig Bellamy free-kick seven minutes into injury time.
