"I'm a bit disappointed we didn't hold out for the three points. I should be delighted coming up here and going back to London with one point, but we should have had three.

"Preston had a lot of possession, but didn't really break us down too often."

Reacting to the suggestion that QPR are tipped for the drop this season, Waddock said: "we don't mind at all we have set our target in-house.

"We know what we want to achieve. We have some good players in the squad and the squad are pulling together."

And he had special praise for Ainsworth, nicknamed 'Wild Thing', when he said: "Gareth always leads by example. He has put in another good performance. He always does that, week-in week-out.

"He always gives 100% whether on the training ground, or in a Championship game.

"He is a character in the dressing room, he gets everyone going. Gareth wears his heart on his sleeve, he is a rock and roller and has put in a captain's performance in that game."

"You can say we were saved in the nick of time. We gave away a sloppy goal. It was a horrible goal to look at, to concede.

"We are going through a period of adjustment. We have to say we are going through a very unlucky period.

"I think we definitely deserved at least a point out of the game. The big thing that let us down was the final ball into the box."
