Who goes and who stays?

Last updated : 14 May 2004 By Mark O' Haire
We look into who is out of contract and who is most likely to be
rewarded for there services.

2) Terrell FORBES (22) Right/ Centre Back. 110apps 0goals.
Rangers’ player of the year when first signed in 2001. Has been a
steady performer despite Stephen Kelly taking his place last season
while on loan. Has since developed into a centre-back this year. Has
never produced the displays he made when first joining the club from
West Ham. Chances: 6/10
4) Steve PALMER (36) Centre Back/ Centre Midfield. 141apps 10goals.
Club captain since moving to Rangers from Watford in the summer of
2001. Was always in the starting line-up but this season his age and
pace seems to have caught up with him and he lost his place in the
side. Possible chances and rumours of him linking up with Ian
Holloway and staying on as his assistant manager. Chances 5/10
5) Clarke CARLISLE (24) Centre Back. 109apps 6goals
Signed from Blackpool before Holloway's reign he injured his cruciate ligaments in his second season to keep him out of action for 9 months. Returned strong and has been at the heart of the defence whenever fit. Well organiesd and has been watched by clubs such as Reading, Sheffield United and Leeds. Suffered from alcohol addiction but with the support from club and fans battled back to be fit to complete the promotion push. Should hopefully stay. Chances 9/10
7) Matthew ROSE (28) Centre Back/Centre Midfield/Utility. 200apps 6goals
Longest serving player since signing from Arsenal under the Bruce Rioch era in '97. Always does his best although being very unfashionable. The unflappable utiltiy man was outstanding in the 3-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday to clinch promotion and it may work in his favour. Chances 7/10
8) Marc BIRCHAM (26) Centre Midfield. 82apps 4goals
A true Rangers fan. Bircham turned down lucrative offers from Premiership clubs to sign for Rangers on a free transfer from Millwall 3 years ago. His aim was to get Rangers back up and in the right direction. The first of these aims has now been completed but Birch will want to carry on the job and look towards the Premiership. Wants to stay but we'll have to wait and see if the club can afford him. Chances 8/10
12) Marcus BIGNOT (29) Right/ Left Back. 1st Spell- 57apps 2goals. 2nd Spell- 6apps 0goals
Diminitive defender with a huge fighting instinct. Bignot is always involved in the heart of the action and since returning from Rushden battled away wether being asked to play on the right or left of the defence. Yet to see if he has worked his way into Ollie's plan. Chances 5/10
15) Richard PACQUETTE (21) Striker. 25apps 6goals
Local born lad with an outstanding reputation at youth levl. Sadly never able to transfer his talent into the first team and has disappointed on loan spells elsewhere. Not part of Ollie's plans after falling behind Gallen, Furlong, Thorpe and Cureton. Chances 2/10
19) Ben WALSHE(21) Left Midfield. 2apps 0goals
Another local born lad with a good reputation. Never really given a good chance in the first team but when included never let the side down. Lacked a little creativity and pace and therefore will probably be let go. Chances 2/10
21) Marien IFURA (?) Defender. 0apps 0goals
Young centre back who has played regular reserve team football. Came through the ranks and always played above his age level but never made the first team although given a squad number this term. Very unlikely to be offered new deal. Chances 1/10
23) Richard EDGHILL (29) Right/ Left back. 22apps 0goals
Signed mid-season, Edghill slotted in at either right or left back whenever called upon. Very strong in the tackle although lacking ideas when going forward, Edgy never looked out of place. Remains to be seen if Ollie keeps him on. Lack of full backs may work in his favour. Chances 6/10
29) Paul FURLONG (35) Striker. Loan Spell (2000-2001)-3apps 1goal. Permanent (2002-2003)- 75apps 30goals
Paul was permanently signed last season and after a slow start established himself in the 1st X1. Tremendous strength and composure along with a wealth of experience has brought about many goals and assists. When in form he is simply outstanding and after his recent performances he deserves a new contract and a crack at division 1. Chances 8/10
30) Richard JOHNSON (30) Centre Midfield. 11apps 0goals
Brought in as cover for injuries in the centre of the park the tough tackling Aussie soon impressed many and always looked better than the division he was playing in. Looks like an excellent player who could prosper in the first division even as a squad player. Should be kept on. Chances 7/10
