Andy Campbell turned into super sub when he half-volleyed Cardiff into Nationwide Division One.
The Bluebirds striker made 32,000 fans sing when he latched onto a throughball from Gareth Whalley and scooped it over Chris Day into the corner of the net just five minutes from the end of extra time.
It had been a close thing.
In truth, QPR had the better of the chances and with steadier finishing from first Paul Furlong and then Andy Thomson, could have had the game won.
Furlong latched onto a mistake from Spencer Prior in the first half and tried an audacious chip which drifted just wide.
Then with only three minutes remaining of ordinary time, amazingly Prior tried a suicidal header and substitute Thomson attempted a headed chip over the keeper.
The chance went wide but Prior could have made spectacular amends at the end of the first period of extra time when Graham Kavanagh's curling free-kick was pinpoint for Prior to head goalwards, only for Day to make a tremendous one-handed save.
In the first period of extra time, another Rangers substitute, Tommy Williams, ran the length of the pitch and around two Cardiff defenders only to scuff his right-foot shot horribly wide with Thomson pleading for the ball to be sent to him.
Before that, Rangers had the best of what half-chances there were. Kevin Gallen's curling free-kick on 30 minutes had the keeper fisting away for a corner.
Three minutes after half time Gallen took a return ball on the edge of the box from Furlong but couldn't get any power behind his low shot.
When Lennie Lawrence took the brave decision to bring off top scorer Rob Earnshaw on 79 minutes there were few who thought Cardiff could snatch it.
