Colchester United denied promotion-chasing QPR a victory in a pulsating end-to-end 2-2 draw at Layer Road.

Paul Furlong scored twice for Rangers in the second half to put them in the driving seat, but Scott McGleish pegged them back with a 75th minute penalty.

It was a stirring encounter in which Colchester were on top in the early stages and deservedly went ahead on 10 minutes. Kem Izzet showed tenacity by winning a tackle while lying on the floor in the penalty area to enable team-mate Karl Duguid to cross to the far post where Rowan Vine swept home.

It was Vine's first goal for Colchester since his loan move from Portsmouth.

Colchester had other chances in the opening period with McGleish heading over on a couple of occasions.

Yet QPR came back strongly towards the end of the first half and they took control in the second.

Furlong equalised in the 49th minute when he latched onto a lay-off from Kevin McLeod before powering past the Colchester defence to beat keeper Simon Brown at his near post.

Colchester had strong appeals for a penalty turned down when Wayne Andrews took a tumble in the box under a challenge from defender Danny Shittu, and QPR went straight down the other end to take the lead.

It was a great solo effort from Furlong. The experienced striker gave Brown no chance with a cracking shot from outside the penalty area to chalk up his fifth goal of the season.

However, Colchester were not finished yet and when Andrews was tugged back in the box referee Paul Armstrong pointed to the spot.

Striker McGleish stepped up to crash home the penalty to earn the Essex club a deserved point.

After losing their first three league games of the campaign, Colchester are now unbeaten in their last three.

Their manager Phil Parkinson said: "I am pleased with the way the team battled back today. I am delighted with the way they rallied to get the draw." QPR's two-goal hero Furlong said: "We are disappointed with the result. I am delighted with my two goals, but I felt that we should have won the game."
