It always happens. As soon as I start talking-up QPR's chances of making the play-offs, they let me down. Don't blame Chesterfield for defending for 90 minutes – they're not the first team to have tried it, but we rarely looked like finding a way through.
Apart from Thomson's late miss and Palmer's effort in the first half which hit the bar, we ploughed through the game as if everyone believed the play-offs were a far flung dream. There was nothing wrong with the tactics, formation or substitutions – we just have this ability to not perform when the mood takes. The windy conditions didn't help of course, but can we use that as an excuse again (last time being the Cambridge 0-0)?
This QPR team does have one big problem though – the inability to keep playing football if the breakthrough doesn't come. When we start playing hit and hope, not only does the quality of play reduce but our frustrations get worse. We've seen it so many times this season, it's often like groundhog day at Loftus Road.
If we don't win at Colchester next week, we can firmly put all thoughts about making the play-offs behind us. Then, it's all about next season — and who knows what that will bring.
