Goals from Kevin Gallen and Martin Rowlands made sure that Stockport couldn't end their record of not having won at home this season.
And on this performance the Hatters, who did have chances to at least salvage a point in the second half, will need to be more ruthless in front of goal if they want to climb away from the relegation battle.
Substitute Chris Williams did pull a goal back five minutes from time with a 25-yard screamer, but by that stage the damage was already done.
County started brightly and nearly took the lead after eight minutes when wing-wizard Andy Welsh darted clear after cutting inside from the left touchline and delivered a delightful ball into the six-yard box.
But there was no one there to smash the ball into the back of the net - a story all too familiar for Stockport on another frustrating afternoon.
It was no surprise then when, in the 19th minute, Kevin McLeod engineered the first breakthrough for the visitors.
Having had a shot blocked by Rob Clare, McLeod got a second bite of the cherry and fired the ball goalwards. There was some dispute as to who got the final touch as John Hardiker and Gallen met on the goal line, but it was the latter who claimed the final touch.
And the damage was doubled two minutes before the break when Rowlands played a clever one-two with Gallen before making no mistake from close range.
County boss Sammy McIlroy made two changes to the line up that triumphed at Brighton last Saturday but the changes did little to ease the growing unrest at Edgeley Park, as they were again let down by the lack of a killer-instinct in front of goal.
It's no wonder that Hatters fans are champing at the bit to see the return of Luke Beckett, their only proven goalscorer in the last few seasons.
